Here’s a truth we could all benefit to remember: When young athletes step onto the field, court, or track, they’re not just learning how to play a game—they’re building the foundation for who they’ll become as human beings. And the secret ingredient? The ENERGY, the BELIEF, the unwavering SUPPORT of their coach.
Research shows that positive, upbeat coaching doesn’t just make sports more enjoyable—it fundamentally transforms how young athletes develop. Kids who experience supportive coaching environments show increased teamwork, confidence, resilience, persistence, and empathy. They bounce back from mistakes. They COMPETE with heart. They become more physically active. But here’s the gut-punch reality: roughly 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13. SEVENTY PERCENT. And while some choose other activities naturally, or perhaps never found the interest or ability, do you know what drives the majority away? Negative coaching environments that emphasize winning over development, criticism over encouragement, pressure over FUN. When coaches focus on results instead of growth, kids walk away from the games they once LOVED. That breaks my heart!
Here’s where it gets exciting—coaches have INCREDIBLE power to change this trajectory! Simple techniques like praising before critiquing, promoting fun over winning, and modeling respectful behavior create environments where athletes THRIVE. In fact, 88% of coaches who participate in positive coaching training report becoming better coaches as a result. Parents see it too—over 80% wish their children had more access to well-trained coaches.
When coaches lead with positivity, encouragement, and genuine BELIEF in their athletes, they’re not just building better players—they’re building confident, resilient young people who carry those lessons FAR beyond the playing field. Does that mean we don’t teach or correct? Of course not. Does it mean we don’t demand excellence in effort and strive for gains in skill and teach our kids to COMPETE and value the PURSUIT of victory? Certainly, NO! But the impact of an upbeat, supportive coach can literally change the trajectory of a young person’s life, turning sports into a launching pad for lifelong success and well-being.
So here’s my challenge to every coach reading this (myself included!!): What if we resolved, RIGHT NOW, to be THAT coach? The one who sees potential instead of mistakes. The one who builds up instead of tears down. The one who creates an environment where kids can’t WAIT to show up and compete – because THAT’S when the magic happens. We’re not just coaching a sport—we’re coaching LIFE.
You’ve got this, my friends! Play in Faith! 💪
